Falling in Love with the Niantic Bay Boardwalk
It would not seem like a boardwalk would be much fun or hold much relevance in another location. However, the Niantic Bay Boardwalk is “the boardwalk” in Connecticut. This boardwalk is located in Niantic Village, and features a very nice waterfront walkway. It is a great place to look over Long Island Sound and a great place to walk and take in some coastal scenery. This boardwalk stretches from Cini Park all the way to the Hole-in-the-Wall Beach on the west side of the town. Guests can park for free here, at either end of the boardwalk. The Niantic Bay Boardwalk is also a popular destination for boating, fishing, and swimming.
Of all of Niantic attractions, the boardwalk is certainly one of the most interesting. The eastern half of the walk crosses over dunes covered with natural vegetation of the village. The sandbar area contains mostly white sand, which is actually a rarity in the state. (Other beaches in Connecticut have rocks and stones throughout their beaches.) This boardwalk, like the rest of the beach, is open to the public. The western half of the boardwalk is a gravel path and it is built, not on native vegetation, but on rock. This is such a natural attraction that guests are often alarmed (and delighted) to find seals swimming freely around the bay area.
Nearby the Niantic Bay area, you can also find Main Street. This is where the majority of stores, small shops, restaurants, and boutiques are located. Recently, the Niantic community pitched in to host a Niantic Boardwalk field trip for students of Southwest Elementary School. Students got a chance to study the earth and ocean area. As you can see, the Niantic Bay Boardwalk is a major part of this village’s heritage. Come see one of the village’s most exciting features!
